Striking video captured with a drone shows two oblivious beachgoers swimming within feet of a massive shark at Daytona Beach last week.
Robert Russ spotted seven-foot long creature while with his brother as it swam about a mile and a half away from the boardwalk, Russ, who is a drone pilot, told Fox 35.
The video shows a bird’s eye view of the swimmers enjoying the clear Florida water, waving up to the camera overhead. As they stand in the waist-deep water, the shark can be seen swimming closer to the pair, who seem completely unaware of their proximity to the massive creature.
The two men started following the shark as it was riding the wave break — and encroaching on clueless swimmers, who were too far away for them to alert.
‘It swam towards multiple people before realizing they were not food and moving on,’ Russ told the station.
The Florida man noted that there have been several shark attacks in the area within the last year, and that it was a relief when the shark seemed to realize the people were not food.,
‘It was unnerving at moments to watch this since there are quite a few people bitten here, but confirms they are generally unintentional bites,’ he said.
Sharks don’t intend to hunt people, but often get spooked or confused when swimming in more shallow waters, which can lead to shark attacks.
In Volusia County, the ‘shark bite capital of the world’, there have been six shark attacks this year, three of which took place in the last month.
Shark attacks have also been on the rise at New York’s beaches, where at least seven people have been bitten by one so far this summer. The recent uptick may be due to a marine heat wave, according to a report by the weather channel.
