Mom 'gave birth in bath, then hurled newborn out window and fatally injured him'

A mother gave birth to a baby boy in the bath, then immediately hurled him out an upstairs window and fatally-injured him, police say.

The unnamed 23 year-old mother went into labor Sunday, and threw her son out the window of her home in Ozone Park, New York City, shortly after delivering him with his umbilical cord still attached.

Dark purple patches of what appeared to be dried blood could be seen on the concrete close to where the baby was found.

Police sources told the New York Post that the infant had suffered injuries which will almost certainly prove fatal, as well as hypothermia. No further updates on the baby’s condition have been given.

Neighbor Elyte Surhabli spotted the stricken infant after going outside to dump some garbage.

She said: ‘I went there to close the gate, and when I heard, like a noise, and I looked. When I looked, I saw that it was a baby noise. And something, like a piece of meat next to it – the umbilical.’

Surhabli said she told a family member to contact 911. She said one of her relatives had heard the baby crying the night before, although it is unclear if the youngster had lain outside all night.

A woman was seen being led out from the house by police on Sunday afternoon. She was taken to a hospital in nearby Jamaica for a psychiatric evaluation pending criminal charges, which have yet to be filed.
