Mike Pence says Donald Trump was wrong claiming he could overturn 2020 election
Former Vice President Mike Pence said Donald Trump was ‘wrong’ in claiming Pence could have overturned the results of the 2020 election, and that ‘the presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone.’
For the first time, Pence directly addressed Trump’s false claim that Pence could have somehow prevented Joe Biden from taking office during a speech to the Federalist Society in Orlando, Florida on Friday.
‘This week, our former president said I had the right to “overturn the election,”‘ Pence said during a speech at the Federalist Society in Florida.
‘President Trump is wrong,’ Pence said. ‘I had no right to overturn the election.’
Trump had publicly and privately urged his former VP to use his position overseeing the counting of the Electoral College votes to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being certified on January 6.
Pence refused to follow the former president’s orders, saying he did not believe he had the authority to do so.
