Mike Pence applauded at Joe Biden inauguration after snubbing Trump farewell

Vice President Mike Pence has arrived at Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony in Washington.

Donald Trump is not attending the ceremony to wish his successor good luck, instead flying to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in the final hour of his presidency for a lavish send-off.

Pence’s relationship with the outgoing President was thought to have been ruined by the riots at the Capitol building, which Trump was accused of inciting, leading to the beginning of an impeachment trial.

On January 6 an angry mob of Trump supporters stormed the heart of American democracy in a bid to disrupt Biden’s certification procedure, which was being carried out by Pence, who was rushed to a secure location with other lawmakers.

Earlier Trump turned on his second-in-command after he said he would not intervene in the election result.

The outgoing US leader still refuses to accept the legitimacy of the election result, repeating baseless and unproven claims that his victory was stolen as a result of widespread voter fraud.

Trump said: ‘Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!’
