Margaret Manson students raise over $1,000 for Riverview Elementary
Sporting their favourite team jerseys on Monday and comfy pyjamas on Friday, students and teachers at Margaret Manson Elementary have raised over $1,000 for their fellow school, Riverview Elementary.
The fundraiser is part of the school’s week-long Carnival event.
Every day, students have donated a toonie, with the proceeds going towards books and teaching supplies for another school, Riverview Elementary.
The school was forced to shut down after a pipe burst on the third floor, causing a flood.
Spearheading the project is physical education teacher Laura Picteracupea, who teaches at both schools.
She says the idea came to staff members at the schools organically.
“Right away, they wanted to help us out. We loved the idea,” Picteracupea said.
Both staff and students at Riverview say they appreciate the gesture from their fellow Lester B. Pearson School Board students.

“My students at Riverview applauded. They were going to write thank you notes; it’s been really well received,” Picteracupea said.
Riverview Elementary teacher Scott Lambton says the news came as a surprise.
“Obviously, we were pretty shocked they were thinking about us in that way and we are extremely grateful,” Lambton said.
Since January, Riverview students have been separated and placed in two schools, Verdun Elementary and Beurling Academy.
Construction on Riverview is expected to be completed by January 2020.
“It’s really been awesome, how the communities have formed this bond through this awful, disastrous thing, but I think in the future we can make a really good connection,” Picteracupea said.
