A grandfather shot his wife and six-year-old grandson dead before turning the gun on himself in an apparent double murder suicide, according to police.

It is believed Terry Majors, 64, killed Leigh Shea-Majors, 61, and Ty Dodson at his home in Tennessee, US, late on Saturday in front of his terrified four-year-old granddaughter.

Police say the girl then ran to a neighbour’s house for help.

Her uncle, Chase Dodson believes Ty told his sister to run before the brutal murders, WKRN reported.

Mr Dodson said the children had been at their grandparent's home before the brutal slayings.

A police investigation is ongoing and a motive in the killings has not yet been determined by officers.

Neighbours said the pair were a helpful and friendly couple and that Terry often mowed lawns for those in need.

Chely Wilson said: “I’m just as dumbfounded as everybody else is to why something like this had happened.

“I know that they loved their grandkids very, very much.”
