Liz Cheney considers presidential run after losing to Trump-backed candidate
In the wake of losing her congressional seat to a challenger backed by ex-President Donald Trump, Republican Rep Liz Cheney says she’s considering a 2024 presidential bid.
Cheney, one of Trump’s biggest critics, late Tuesday was projected to lose the Republican primary to Harriet Hageman by a more than 35-point margin.
On Wednesday, Cheney, of Wyoming, said she plans to be part of a bipartisan coalition aimed and preventing Trump from ever holding office again. She was then pressed by NBC News on whether she plans to run for president.
‘That’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months, and I’m not going to make any announcements here this morning,’ Cheney told Samantha Guthrie of the TODAY show.
‘But it is something that I am thinking about.’
Cheney, the former chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, reiterated that she will do everything she can to stop Trump from winning future elections.
‘I believe that Donald Trump continues to pose a very grave threat and risk to our republic,’ she said. ‘And I think that defeating him is going to require a broad and united front of Republicans, Democrats and independents, and that’s what I intend to be a part of.’
Overnight, Cheney formed a political action committee (PAC) called The Great Task. She filed to transfer remaining funds from her federal campaign to the new PAC. Federal Election Commission records show that Cheney had more than $7million in the account in late July.
‘I have said since January 6 that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office – and I mean it,’ Cheney said in her concession speech on Tuesday night.
Cheney is the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.
‘This primary election is over,’ she told her supporters. ‘But now the real work begins.’
Trump rejoiced over Cheney’s loss and congratulated Hageman on her ‘very decisive WIN’.
‘This is a wonderful result for America, and a complete rebuke of the Unselect Committee of political Hacks and Thugs,’ wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform, referring to the January 6 committee.
‘Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others.
‘Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now.’
Hageman’s victory is the latest among Trump-supporting candidates. It came the week after the FBI raided the ex-president’s Mar-a-Lago home to seize classified documents, embroiling Trump in his latest controversy.
