Joe Biden to visit UK for climate change and meet Pope in Italy G20 summit
President Joe Biden is set to travel to Italy and meet Pope Francis during the G20 Leaders’ Summit, as well as to the UK for a United Nations convention on climate change.
Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, will visit Rome for the G20 summit on October 30 and 21, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Thursday.
‘The President and Dr Biden will also visit Vatican City and have an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis on October 29,’ Psaki stated.
‘They will discuss working together on efforts grounded in respect for fundamental human dignity, including ending the Covid-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor.’
Additional information on individual bilateral meetings Biden will have on the margins of G20 ‘will be forthcoming’, she said.
Biden will then travel to Glasgow to participate in the World Leader Summit at the start of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) on November 1 and 2.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi set October 31 as the deadline to pass Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill and the multi-trillion reconciliation bill.
Asked whether Biden could postpone his trip abroad if the bills are not passed by the time of his scheduled departure, Psaki said, ‘I’m not going to set new timelines here’.
