Alberta’s police watchdog said it’ll likely be at least another month until the initial investigation into an incident involving a Lethbridge police officer who ran over a deer with his truck is complete.

The lead investigator from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team told Global News on Monday that the initial investigation is ongoing, and likely won’t be done for another month.

From there, the investigation goes up to a supervisor for review and ultimately a decision. That process will likely take several more months, the investigator said.

In early January, a woman captured the disturbing incident on her cellphone. The video showed a police officer running over a deer multiple times with his patrol vehicle, as the animal lay dying on Scenic Drive North.

In the nearly 15-minute video, shared exclusively with Global News, the officer runs over the injured animal slowly with his truck at least four additional times.

At the time, Lethbridge police chief Robert Davis welcomed the ASIRT investigation and said the incident was being taken very seriously.

The ASIRT investigation will review the officer’s actions as well as the Lethbridge Police Service’s policies and procedures for responding to injured animal calls.

The police officer involved in the incident remains on active duty. A petition calling for the officer to be fired has garnered more than 95,000 signatures.
