Illegal hunter fatally shot by fellow huntsman after 'being mistaken for a deer'

An illegal huntsman barred from owning a gun was shot and killed by a fellow hunter after he was mistaken for a deer, it is claimed. Lukas Dudley, 28, died after Rain Stately, 33, allegedly mistook him for a deer during a dusk hunt and opened fire. The shooting happened close to Puposky, Minnesota, last Wednesday.

Dudley died just weeks after being released from jail for an unspecified offense – which saw a court issue an order barring him from owning a firearm.

A Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said that Stately ‘observed movement of what he thought was a deer and fired one round from his rifle.’ Dudley was later found not to be wearing any of the brightly-colored gear worn by hunters to stop them being mistaken for animals.

Stately is said to have called 911 as soon as he realized he had struck Dudley, and has been cooperating with investigators. Investigators have yet to decide whether or not to charge him, the Star Tribune reported.

Dudley was killed a week after 17 year-old Justin Lee Smith from Supply in North Carolina fell from a ladder while hunting and fatally impaled himself on the barrel of his own weapon.
