Hero teacher jumps on pitbull as it attacks terrified children inside school

A hero teacher leapt on an out-of-control pitbull and held it down to prevent it attacking more students in a vicious mauling.

Shocking video taken at a school in Oklahoma City shows Lee Hughes grappling with the black and white dog, which had already injured five pupils.

Bodycam footage reveals Hughes lay on top of the animal as other teachers took children to safety.

It happened at Fillmore Elementary School on November 17, the Miami Herald reports.

The dog is thought to have escaped from a neighbouring home before running riot in the corridors.

In the video, cop Sgt Jesse McRay is heard telling Hughes: "You just saved someone."

McRay helped the teacher bring the dog under control so animal control officers could take it away.

The teacher was branded "our hero" by school principal Susan Martin Rachels, who said: "We’re going to have to have a ‘Lee Hughes Day’ or something at school."

Five children suffered ‘superficial’ or ‘escape’ injuries, and were taken to hospital, but none were critically injured.

It remains unclear what will happen to the dog, and no owners have been identified.
