Hero risks life to stop thieves taking his car after jumping onto moving vehicle

This is the shocking moment a man clings onto a moving car after risking his life to stop two thieves stealing it.

Two suspects hijacked James Dillon's SUV, outside his home in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday – but he was not ready to let the culprits escape that easily.

In a daring move, the 59-year-old jumped onto the hood of his car to block the thieves from fleeing the scene.

But they continued driving for several blocks swerving across the road as the man clung on for his life.

Eventually, he fell off and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, suffering head trauma and a broken collar bone.

Lorenzo Esiahs, 18, from Newark, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, carjacking, burglary, theft and conspiracy.

Charges were also pending against a 17-year-old boy from Newark, but further details have not been released due to his age.

The pair initially stole a 2016 Toyota Highlander and the keys to a Toyota RAV4 from a home around 4 a.m, a Belleville police spokesman Lt. John McAloon said.
