Gunman who left three dead and 15 injured at popular food festival is named

The gunman who left three dead and 15 injured at a popular food festival in California has been named as Santino William Legan.

Police confirmed the suspect was shot and killed when he was confronted by officers shortly after his rampage at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

The gunman may have had an accomplice, and that person's role in the shooting is unclear, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee earlier said.

A six-year-old boy was one of the three people killed in the mass shooting on Sunday evening.

Stephen Romero was attending the event with his mother and other family members.

His mum and grandmother were injured in the attack as thousands of revellers ran for their lives.

Stephen was the first victim to be identified after the gunman – who witnesses say was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and was wearing military fatigues – was shot dead by police.

Stephen's devastated dad Alberto Romero told NBC News: "My son had his whole life to live. He was only six."

The annual festival, which was attended by 80,000 people last year, was in its third and final day when the horror incident happened.

The shooting happened close to food tents and a children's play area.

Police told reporters: "It's just incredibly sad and disheartening that at an event that does so much good the community had to suffer from a tragedy like this."

One witness told NBC that the gunman "pulled out a semi-automatic rifle and started shooting".

"He was shooting left to right," he added.

Some witnesses claimed a second gunman was seen at the site.

Officers were still looking for a potential second suspect on Monday.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival is said to be one of the biggest food festivals in the United States.
