Grumpy Cat dies ‘at home in the arms of her mommy’
The world’s most famous moody moggy has died.
Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) passed away on Tuesday but her owners announced the death on Twitter on Friday morning.
They said: “We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat.
“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became to tough for her to overcome.
“She passed away peacefully…at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”
Grumpy Cat and her permanent frown became a social media sensation after her picture was posted online in 2012.
Last year she won a $710,000 (£556,000) payout following a lawsuit against a coffee company that used her image beyond the limits of a contract they had signed with the cat’s owners.
At the time, Grumpy Cat’s lawyer David Jonelis, said he believed it was the first time an internet meme had won a court case.
The cat had 1.5 million followers on Twitter, more than 8 million followers on Facebook and 2.4 million on Instagram.
Her owner Tabatha Bundesen, of Morristown, Arizona, was even able to quit her job as a waitress, thanks to her pet’s earnings, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
After Grumpy’s death, the owners said: “Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough.
“Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
Wherever she is now, Grumpy Cat is probably still frowning.
