Greta Thunberg compared to Nazi propaganda girl by US commentator
Greta Thunberg’s appearance has been compared to Nazi propaganda by a US commentator.
Right-wing writer Dinesh D’Souza tweeted that the 16-year-old climate change activist’s lack of make up and distinctive hairstyle was akin to ‘an old Goebbels technique’ used in the 1930s.
He wrote: ‘Children—notably Nordic white girls with braids and red cheeks—were often used in Nazi propaganda. An old Goebbels technique!
‘Looks like today’s progressive Left is still learning its game from an earlier Left in the 1930s.’
He then shared a picture of Greta alongside a wartime propaganda image of a girl wearing her hair in plaits and brandishing the Nazi flag.
The post has since received over 33,000 responses from other Twitter users, with many of them branding it ‘hateful’, ‘disturbing’ and ‘offensive’.
Others pointed out that the Left were ‘enemies of the Nazis’, referencing a slew socialist figures persecuted during the Third Reich.
One person wrote: ‘This is one of the most offensive tweets I have ever seen. You should be ashamed of yourself.‘
Another mocked: ‘Love this game. You wear a shirt and have black hair. So did Hitler! You are Hitler!’
While a third said: ‘Hitler used “Make Germany Great Again,” but sure, pick on the young woman trying to save the planet.’
On Friday, Greta led a global strike for climate change that saw more than 150 countries take part in over 5,000 events.
The schoolgirl, who first started striking on her own last year, admitted that she had no idea the idea would take off so quickly.
She said: ‘I would never have predicted or believed that this was going to happen someday and so fast.’
Greta also described the huge numbers of protesters as a ‘victory’, adding that it is now up to world leaders to take action.
More climate change protests are expected to take place on September 27.
