Godfather of infamous New York Mafia family shot dead outside home
The godfather of an infamous New York crime family has been shot dead outside his home.
Frank Cali was shot up to six times before being run over, according to US media reports.
He is believed to be the head of the infamous Gambino crime family – one of the New York Mafia’s ‘five families’.
Cali, 53, was rushed to hospital from his home in Staten Island, but was later declared dead.
The mobster, who took over the family in 2015, is believed to be the first New York Mafia godfather to have been murdered since 1985.
A 911 caller reported hearing six or seven gun shots ring out across the neighbourhood.
No-one has been arrested and police are now hunting for the killer, who is believed to have fled in a blue pick-up truck.
A police source described Cali to the New York Post as a "real quiet old-school boss".
Cali reportedly had just one criminal conviction on his record for extortion in 2008. He served 10 months in jail.
Under his leadership, the Gambino family reportedly focused its efforts on dealing heroin and commonly abused painkiller OxyContin.
The Gambino crime family has been active since the early 1900s with activities including racketeering, extortion, fraud, gambling, money laundering, murder, robbery and drug trafficking.
