El Chapo fails in attempt to delay trial
A judge in the US has turned down a last-ditch effort by accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to delay his trafficking trial, scheduled to begin next Monday in Brooklyn federal court.
Lawyers for Guzman said in a motion last week they needed more time to review more than 14,000 pages of documents, largely related to key witnesses expected to testify.
However, US District Judge Brian Cogan said the volume of documents was in line with what they should have expected. In a concession, he ruled opening statements would begin no earlier than November 13.
