The city of Edmundston, N.B., has joined Halifax in declaring a “climate emergency” and has stated it will continue to contribute to the fight against climate change.

The symbolic declaration is part of the Citizens’ Universal Declaration of Climate Emergency, which recognizes that the climate situation is precarious worldwide and urgent measures should be put in place.

“The City of Edmundston is already experiencing some of the impacts of climate change, including torrential rains and extreme flood events, increased frequency and intensity of extreme heat, and the proliferation of invasive species,” said Mayor Cyrille Simard in a news release.

Like many cities across the country that have ratified this declaration, Edmundston is also committed to fight climate change through “concrete measures.”

In January, Halifax council voted to do the same.

At the time, the municipality said it was unlikely to receive additional funds from the provincial or federal governments as a result of the decision, but would use the declaration as an opportunity to stress that climate change is real, while considering how it might implement serious changes to the municipality’s climate change plan.
