Donald Trump ‘needs to be in prison’ for January 6: fallen Capitol cop's partner

Approaching the first anniversary of the deadly January 6 insurrection, the longtime partner of fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick said that ex-President Donald Trump ‘needs to be in prison’ for his role.

Speaking to PBS NewsHour three days before the anniversary, Sandra Garza said she holds Trump ‘100% responsible’ for the death of her boyfriend for 11 years.

Trump supporters sprayed Sicknick, protecting the Capitol building, with a chemical. The evening of January 6, 2020, the 42-year-old collapsed, had two strokes and died the following day of natural causes, according to a medical examiner.

‘To what extent do you hold the former president responsible for this?’ PBS NewsHour host Judy Woodruff asked Garza on Monday night.

Woodruff then asked Garzza how she thinks Trump should be held accountable.

‘Personally, for me, I think he needs to be in prison,’ Garza replied. ‘That is what I think.’

Garza continued that Trump ‘has been playing these legal wrangling games for decade’ and ‘ knows how to skirt the system’, which is ‘the sad piece’.

‘But it would be very – what’s the word I’m looking for? – satisfying to me to see him in prison,’ Garza said.

Garza, an independent, added that she does not regret voting for Trump. She pointed out that Sicknick was a Republican and believes he ‘would be horrified’ if he knew more about how the riot unfolded.

The House select committee investigating the Capitol riot has questioned why Trump – who held a rally on January 6 telling his supporters to fight the election results – waited so long to tell them to back off the attack.

‘I think, sadly, Brian did not live long enough to see the evidence that has come forth to show what kind of man Donald Trump really is,’ Garza said. ‘I think he would have viewed Donald Trump in a very different light.’

Garza concluded that Trump ‘is just a horrible person’.

‘He still has not contacted me, by the way,’ she said.
