Conor McGregor charges dropped over allegation he smashed fan’s mobile

Charges have been dropped against UFC fighter Conor McGregor after he was accused of smashing and stealing a fan’s phone outside a Miami Beach hotel.

Announcing the decision on Monday, the Florida state attorney’s office said the alleged victim had stopped co-operating with the investigation having already settled a civil lawsuit with McGregor.

Prosecutor Khalil Madani said: “The victim does not wish to return to the United States and prosecute this case.”

McGregor, 30, was arrested on 11 March after an altercation with a fan, Ahmed Abdirzak, who had tried to take video of the fighter outside the Fontainebleau hotel.

It had been alleged that McGregor walked up to Mr Abdirzak, extended his hand and then punched the phone out of Mr Abdirzak’s hand.

According to the lawsuit filed by Mr Abdirzak, the phone fell to the ground and McGregor stamped on it repeatedly.

The lawsuit said: “The defendant then picked up the smashed phone and slipped it into his pocket before strutting off to a waiting SUV.”

McGregor shot to sporting fame as a title-winning UFC fighter, before making switching to boxing and losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

In his last UFC fight, McGregor lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.

He recently launched a fashion line called August McGregor, which sells modern suits to millennials, and a whiskey label.
