CNN president Jeff Zucker resigns over romantic relationship with colleague

CNN president Jeff Zucker announced his resignation Wednesday, and pointed to his failure to disclose his romantic relationship with a close colleague as why he was leaving after nine years.

Zucker’s resignation comes with an acknowledgement that he failed to share, as he should have disclosed, that he had a romantic relationship with a co-worker whom he had worked with for over 20 years. As part of the investigation into then-network anchor Chris Cuomo and his role in advising his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during a sexual harassment scandal.

The email from Zucker about his resignation was tweeted by CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter.

‘I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years. I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong. As a result, I am resigning today,’ he wrote.

While he did not name the colleague whom he is in a consensual romantic relationship with, CNN disclosed that colleague is Allison Gollust, the chief marketing officer for CNN. Gollust will continue to work at CNN.

In an email to sent to staff, Jason Kilar, the CEO of CNN parent company WarnerMedia, said, ‘I have accepted Jeff Zucker’s resignation as Chairman of WarnerMedia News and Sports, and President of CNN Worldwide. We thank Jeff for his contributions over the past 9 years.’

An interim leadership plan is expected to be made public soon, according to Kilar.

Zucker’s resignation comes as WarnerMedia and Discovery are in the process of merging into one company.
