California couple and son, 3, found dead in Airbnb in Mexico

What started as a family vacation to Mexico ended unexpectedly when a couple and their 3-year-old son were found dead in an Airbnb apartment from an apparent gas leak.

Jose Nunez Jr, his wife Maria and their son Jayden were visiting family in Mexico when they were all found dead in the same room. They were on a family trip to Tijuana and were found dead on September 25, according to the Daily Beast.

The family from Delano, California, was staying in an Airbnb shared with other members of their extended family, none of whom were harmed by the gas leak, according to WSFA.

Jose’s aunt, Trini Jacobo, says there are too many questions in need of answers. But the family is just looking to get their three loved ones brought home to California.

‘They’re still in Mexico, and they’re going to be performing an autopsy and definitely getting down to the root of what caused their deaths. So, we’re not sure about any specifics at this time,’ Jacobo said.

‘We’re not worried about anything else right now. We want our loved ones back in the states. We want to know what happened to them, of course, but… right now, we’re focused on getting Jose, Maria and Jayden home.’

Those close to the Nunez family are in shock, Jacobo told the TV station, adding that the family members were some of the nicest people.

Grieving them, especially her 3-year-old nephew, will be incredibly difficult, she said.

‘Just a really good family. Both of them are very family oriented. Jose is probably – honestly, not just because he’s my nephew – but he’s one of the best dads I know,’ she said. ‘In love with his family. He’s always hugging them, always holding them.’

A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money that would go toward transportation costs to get the late family members home and for their funeral expenses.

Nearly $23,000 of the $30,000 goal has been raised.

The Nunez family leaves behind four other young children.

In a statement, Airbnb called the deaths a ‘horrific tragedy’ and said it is investigating what happened. The listing on Airbnb has been deactivated amid the probe.

‘The thoughts of our team are with the Nunez children and the entire extended family as they grieve the losses of Jose, Maria and Jayden,’ Airbnb stated. ‘Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Airbnb, and we are conducting a comprehensive investigation into what happened.’
