Police have arrested a bus driver after a passenger she allegedly locked in the luggage compartment called 911 while trapped inside.

Wendy Helena Alberty was taken into custody after officers intercepted the Boston-bound Peter Pan vehicle as it headed down Interstate 84 in Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.

The call had been traced to the moving bus, which police said was being driven by a man when it was pulled over in the northeastern town of Union.

He was asked to open the luggage compartment, where a woman was found.

She reportedly told police that she had been purposefully locked inside by a female driver, who was still on the bus as a passenger when the vehicle was pulled over.

According to a police report seen by NBC News, the victim refused medical attention and said she had been locked up while trying to retrieve items from her bag.

She then identified the suspect as Alberty.

Connecticut state police said the 49-year-old, from New Jersey, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment and breach of peace.

Bus operator Peter Pan, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, said it was co-operating with the investigation.

The company said Alberty had been an employee since 2012 and had an “exemplary” record, having received “many customer commendations for her safe driving and customer service”.

She has been suspended pending the outcome of the police inquiry and is due in court later this month.
