Bodies of two children found at Miami building collapse as death toll up to 18

The bodies of two children 4 and 10 years old were pulled from the Miami-area building collapse site, bringing the death toll up to 18. The children were among six victims found dead on the seventh day of search and rescue efforts.

‘The loss of children is too great to bear,’ Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a news conference. ‘Our community, our nation and the world all are mourning with these families who have lost loved ones.’

There are still 147 people unaccounted for.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett has told families that rescue crews are ‘not leaving anyone behind’. The pancaked, partial collapse of Champlain Towers South last Thursday left layers of intertwined debris that has complicated search and rescue efforts.

‘We’ve not gotten to the bottom,’ Burkett said. ‘We don’t know what’s down there.’
