Big and bold looks on Golden Globes red carpet
SINGAPORE – The fashion at the 77th Golden Globes Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California on Jan 6 (Singapore time) was big and bold with many highlights and, unfortunately, several disasters too. Here are some first impressions from the red carpet.
1. BILLY PORTER
The man who turned up for the Oscars in a tuxedo gown brought the magic once more for the Golden Globes in this custom feathered jacket by Alex Vinash, with boots from Jimmy Choo. Porter, the lead star of Pose, looked bold and resplendent.
2. ANA DE ARMAS
The Knives Out breakout star de Armas looked stunning in a strapless, glittery midnight blue gown from Ralph & Russo. The Cuban-Spanish paired her look with a bold red lip, channelling old Hollywood glamour.
3. ZOE KRAVITZ
Kravitz rocked the notoriously difficult pixie cut in a polka-dot ensemble. Perhaps it is the hair, or her innate chic-ness – she almost resembles Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn.
4. SCARLETT JOHANSSON
Marriage Story’s leading lady Johansson came to the Globes in a big, poufy red dress from Vera Wang. The plunging neckline is too wide proportion-wise and the small triangle of illusion netting is very visible.
5. AWKWAFINA
Never one to stick to the conventional pretty dresses, star of The Farewell Awkwafina came in a take on the tuxedo from Dior. The neck ruffles are almost overwhelming but give the dress some visual interest.
6. JENNIFER LOPEZ
Genuinely worried about Lopez after she showed up in this green, gold and white get-up. Sexy, bold, age-defying are common terms used to describe J Lo outfits so this mess of a crinkled-up Christmas gift wrap with not one but two comically huge bows is cause for concern. J Lo, are you okay?
7. GWYNETH PALTROW
See-through does not always mean sexy and just because you can does not always mean you should. Thank you Paltrow for teaching us a lesson in this earwax-coloured Fendi dress.
8. KERRY WASHINGTON
Washington’s Altuzarra blazer, skirt and silver chain combo looks painful and impractical. It begs the question: why?
