Akins High School in Texas on lockdown amid reports of ‘armed person’
A Texas high school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following reports of an armed person on campus.
Akins Early College High School in south Austin had a ‘heavy police presence’ just after 10am, according to Austin ISD Police Chief Ashley Gonzalez.
Gonzalez shared the information via Twitter, saying, ‘Akins HS currently on LOCKDOWN white @AIDSPolice investigate a report of an armed subject.’
In a second message Gonzalez said students and staff are safe at the campus and parents should refrain from coming to the school as the investigation continues. The district said it will update the public on the situation every 20 minutes.
According to the school’s website, a ‘lockdown’ means that staff and students remain behind a locked door, shut off the lights and keep quiet and out of sight while officials work to clear a potential threat inside the school.
The lockdown comes less than 24 hours after a 15-year-old opened fire on his high school classmates and teachers, killing three students and injuring eight others.
