Airbnb guest books NYC room – but it’s a cupboard with ‘dirty’ camping mattress

It can be costly to find accommodation in New York City, so it's no surprise some people choose to settle for smaller bedrooms.

But one Airbnb listing in the city went even further, offering a staircase cupboard with a thin mattress, according to a shocked guest.

Zoe Reeve, 26, who was visiting for the Labour Day Carnival, arrived at her Airbnb room in a shared apartment to find it was just a tiny closet with a mattress that "feels like you're just sleeping on a yoga mat," reports Business Insider .

Although she said she wasn't expecting luxury when she booked the cheapest available room for $27 (£22) a night, she said she was shocked at how dirty the living room and common spaces were, and the fact that her bedding appeared dirty.

She told the Insider: "I booked the Airbnb because I'm not fussy about accommodation when I travel. I obviously booked the cheapest accommodation in Brooklyn, so I knew it wasn't going to be amazing, and I normally choose the cheapest one wherever I go.

"The worst part of the room is probably the bed, but also the fact that it gets super hot because there's no fan, so I have to sleep with the window open, which is obviously not safe and also means I can hear everyone shouting in the street outside."

But Ms Reeve said while the space resembling Harry Potter's staircase room was not what she expected, it is not a big deal for her as it allows people like her to travel on a budget.

She posted photos and videos of the room on Twitter and Instagram but they were later deleted.

According to Business Insider, when Ms Reeve contacted her host, he said the person who was supposed to clean the apartment failed to so. The host apologised, pointed her to clean sheets, and refunded the cleaning fee.

The Airbnb listing , however, explicitly states the size and condition of the room and provides photos of the tiny room and mattress.

It reads: "The space is ideal for backpackers and other budget travelers who are comfortable sleeping on a self inflating camping pad with another camping pad underneath. I most certainly would NOT recommend the space for anyone over 6'1 or who otherwise is not comfortable sleeping in small spaces for individual persons.

"Our huge shared spaces and fully stocked kitchen will make you feel right at home when you're back for the night! Our dining/office space, and downstairs common area with mats for movement and exercise are available to you when you're here."

The room has a 4.5 star rating on Airbnb and most of the written reviews appear to be positive.

One said the accommodation was "exactly as described".
