2 Killed in Shooting at Walmart in Mississippi, Sheriff Says
Two people were killed and a police officer was injured in a shooting at a Walmart in Mississippi early Tuesday, according to local news reports.
A suspect began shooting around 6:30 a.m.
The suspect was a former employee who had worked at the Walmart in Southaven, Miss., until Monday, Sheriff Bill Rasco of DeSoto County told The Commercial Appeal.
Two people who were believed to be employees of the store were found dead, he said.
A Southaven police officer was shot but not seriously injured, according to Deborah Rosenberg, a 911 administrator for the city of Southaven. Local 24 News in Memphis reported that the officer had been wearing a bulletproof vest.
The suspect was also injured and was being treated at a hospital, according to local reports.
Walmart employees, some still in their uniforms, formed a circle and held hands after the shooting, according to a local reporter at the scene.
Southaven is a city of about 55,000 in northern Mississippi, on the border with Tennessee, about 13 miles from Memphis.
A news conference was scheduled for late morning.
