South Africa, Cameron and Nigeria qualify for the World Cup
Nigeria has maintained its continuous dominance over African women’s football by winning a ninth African Nations Cup last Saturday in Accra, Ghana, against South Africa.
The “Super Falcons” earned their third African cup in-series, their ninth title since 1991, while Equatorial Guinea won the two other editions in 2002 and 2008.
The South African Banyana Banyana’s dream of winning their first continental title faced an experienced Nigerian team led by Rita Chikwelu, Ngozi Ebere, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Chinaza Uchendu who all contributed to Nigeria’s victory thanks to their successful penalty kicks. Alice Matlou, Nompumelelo Nyandeni and Mamello Makhabane scored for South Africa, while Lebohang Ramalepe and Linda Motlhalo missed.
Nigeria and South Africa will represent Africa at the 2019 World Cup in France next June, alongside Cameroon, third in the continental tournament after defeating Mali (4-2) in the match for third place.
With New Zealand qualifying on Saturday, the set of 24 teams for the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France is now complete, one week before the draw, on December 8th .
“Congratulations to the twenty-three teams that qualified for the World Cup! France and the French will be happy to receive them, I am convinced. Now, time for the draw. The Women’s World Cup will take place from June 7th to July 7th in nine host cities: Grenoble, Le Havre, Lyon, Montpellier, Nice, Paris, Reims, Rennes and Valenciennes. The opening match, with the France team, will take place in the Parc des Princes, while the semi-finals and the final will be played in Lyon.
