Supermarket shelves are evolving as fast as our eating habits, with new – and old – products entering and disappearing from aisles every week in the UK – in what many would describe as a frustrating change.

Take discontinued products, for instance. There's something quite sinking about going into your local supermarket, only to discover that one new pasta sauce, biscuit or even moisturiser you love has suddenly been written off.

That's the feeling Aldi shoppers have been venting about this week on one social media page, after one user asked fellow shoppers "what discontinued products they miss the most?".

Describing their iconic favourites, fans were quick to reveal their frustration with limited-time only make up products – which in many cases failed to ever make a comeback.

Other shoppers said they'd like to see the chain's seasonal Big Daddy and Wagyu Steaks brought back permanently – instead of as one-off lines throughout the year.

Talking about the products that have been discontinued, the chain's fresh pasta ravioli filled with prawn and lobster seemed to turn heads – with one shopper saying she'd happily petition to see it back on shelves.

The big question has sparked a debate online about why retailers are discontinuing products which are clearly, tangibly, universally loved.

These reasons can be anything from specific formulas – that are costly and hard to obtain – to lack of resource or suppliers to help deliver the product at the budgeted price.

It's often also linked to a drop in demand. You'll frequently find the items that haven't sold well over a 'trial period' will be the ones that disappear the fastest.
