Wadi al-Salam: The world's largest cemetery

This is where most Shia Muslims want to be buried and the ever-growing cemetery will also have an effect on the future of the city of Najaf.

    One of the world’s largest cemeteries is in the Iraqi city of Najaf. Every year, 50,000 people are buried here.

    Wadi al-Salam means “Valley of peace” and it is believed that this land was purchased centuries ago by the prophet Abraham.

    This is an important resting place for Shia Muslims from around the world.
