UK weather warning: Huge hurricane in Atlantic to bring hot weather to Britain next week

The Met Office said the hurricane could disrupt the jet stream, a band of strong winds which affect our weather, resulting in higher temperatures for the first week of August. But forecasters say its unlikely another heatwave is on its way, after Britons last week basked in the hottest July day on record. The Met Office said an Atlantic hurricane “could disrupt the jetstream and bring a warm spell” but weather watchers are “definitely not expecting any heatwaves” to be caused by the potential disturbance.

The UK has been hit with unsettled and sometimes stormy weather since last week’s heatwave which saw the temperature linger in the mid-Thirties.

Forecasters predict the unsettled weather will continue next week, with heavy rains, especially in the northwest expected on Monday.

The Army was called in to deal with the aftermath of torrential rains in Yorkshire, which flooded homes and businesses, burst a bridge and caused travel chaos.

On Thursday there were 17 flood warnings in force across England, from Rugby up to the North York Moors.

The Environment Agency said local flooding is also possible due to the thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Three inches of rain fell in North Yorkshire in a day, causing a bridge used in the 2014 Tour de France to be swept away.

The bridge over Cogden Gill on Grinton Moor is due to be on the route of the prestigious UCI World Championships in September.

The torrential rains also flooded the A555 in Stockport, resulting in major disruption for drivers.

The floods in the Yorkshire Dales brought about biblical scenes, with rescuers reported seeing sheds and oil tanks floating down roads where “100 or more” homes were damaged.

Customers at the Brymor Ice Cream parlour, near Masham, suffered minor injuries after being caught in a freak hailstorm.

The company posted Facebook: “Our parlour suffered damage to the roof, power failures and some visitors suffered minor injuries.

“Our team of staff acted as quickly and professionally as possible to ensure all our visitors were made safe.”

Steve Clough, of Swaledale Mountain Rescue, described the roads as “a raging torrent” with “sheds and household oil tanks floating down them”.

Lightning strikes are set to wreak havoc in parts of the UK this week, with frequent strikes expected to hit the country until next week.

According to the latest weather map, the wave of strikes will culminate on Tuesday, when thousands of lighting strikes will descend upon the UK.

The Met Office has warned of widespread storms over the coming days, and said commuters should be prepare for delayed or cancelled busses and trains.
