UK weather ALERT: Heavy snow, ice, rain & floods – six ‘biblical’ weather warnings issued

While South Yorkshire and the Midlands recover from what residents described as “biblical” rain, forecasts show more might be on its way, further damaging the flood-ravaged region. Now, the Met Office has issued a swathe of extreme weather warnings, covering much of the nation.

Latest warnings from the Met Office

The Met Office has issued three snow warnings, two rain warnings and one ice warning for Thursday.

One of the rain warnings, covering parts of the regions worst-hit by flooding, is in place into easy Friday.

The Met Office has issued a warning that there could be a “danger to life” in parts still recovering from floods which began last week.

The heaviest of the rain is expected to hit the area between 9am and 10am and continue throughout the day.

Forecasters are predicting between 35mm and 45mm of rainfall.

The Met Office warned there could be a risk to life “because these areas are very waterlogged already”.

Meanwhile, as Yorkshire prepares for more rain, parts of south Wales and southwest England between Bath, Oxford and Worcester are under snow warnings.

And in eastern coastal regions of Scotland, from Kelso north to Elgin, ice warnings are in place.

Latest flood warnings from the Environment Agency

The Government’s Environment Agency (EA) has removed all severe flood warnings for now, which will come as a relief for residents along the River Don.

However, 39 flood warnings, which state that “flooding is expected – immediate action required” remain in place.

There are also 125 flood alerts, with “flooding is possible – be prepared” warnings.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said “the worst of the winter weather has now moved through” the South West.

However, he added: “It’s the same one that’s going to push its way north and will affect the flooded areas from last week.

“Even some amount of rain could cause rivers to rise.”

It comes after the Prime Minister was criticised for his response to the flooding.

Boris Johnson visited Stainforth, South Yorkshire, on Wednesday and one woman helping the recovery effort told him: “You’ve not helped us up to press. I don’t know what you’re here today for.”

Another said to him: “You’ve took your time, Boris, haven’t you?”

Mr Johnson had insisted: “We’ve been on it round the clock.”

More than 100 soldiers have been sent to South Yorkshire to help residents clean up and, during a visit to the town of Fishlake later in the day, Mr Johnson promised: “We will get people back on their feet.”
