Theresa May says she will quit once Brexit deal is delivered

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday told Tory Members of Parliament she will resign once a Brexit deal has been reached.

The Prime Minister made the remark as she addressed the Conservative party’s 1922 Committee.

May has been dragged down by partisan warfare over the UK’s split from the EU.

“I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party,” May told the group.

“I ask everyone in this room to back the deal so we can complete our historic duty — to deliver on the decision of the British people and leave the European Union with a smooth and orderly exit.”

May acknowledged the bitter divide separating the country — and even creating tension between May and her own party.

“This has been a testing time for our country and our party. We’re nearly there. We’re almost ready to start a new chapter and build that brighter future. But before we can do that, we have to finish the job in hand,” she told the group. the Financial Times reported.

I know there is a desire for a new approach – and new leadership – in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations – and I won’t stand in the way of that,” she said.

British lawmakers, meanwhile, debated multiple options for leaving the EU as they sought to bring some clarity to the tortured Brexit process and stop the country from leaving the bloc within weeks with no exit plan in place.

In the wake of two overwhelming defeats for May’s withdrawal agreement with the EU, the House of Commons seized control of the parliamentary timetable for debate and votes on a range of Brexit alternatives.
