  • The racist thug was later pictured shirtless and sticking his middle finger up

This is the disgusting moment a racist lout makes monkey gestures at Black Lives Matter protesters in London.

Appalling footage shows the thug goading anti-racism campaigners in Trafalgar Square, which on Saturday saw ugly clashes between BLM supporters and far-right groups.

From the raised ledge by the National Gallery, the man and his gang of yobs were seen baying at BLM activists who had marched on Nelson’s Column from Hyde Park.

The man, wearing a red Coca Cola t-shirt, then starts scratching his armpits as if mimicking a monkey, before being bundled away from the edge of the platform by riot police.

A sickened witness among the BLM demonstrators can be heard saying: ‘Look he’s calling us monkeys.’

The thug was later pictured shirtless and sticking his middle finger up just outside the square, while a constable stands by.

Impersonating a monkey is a trope sometimes deployed by racist hooligans at football matches to denigrate BAME sportspeople.

It was caught on camera at Saturday’s BLM demonstration, which attracted a fierce counter-protest from groups claiming to be defending statues – which included supporters of the far-right.

Both protests plunged into violence, with officers fighting to separate the two sides who ran riot through the capital.

As well as Waterloo Station, Trafalgar Square became an epicentre for the brawls.

Scotland Yard said they had made 113 arrests during the protest, where 23 constables were also injured.

MailOnline has contacted the Metropolitan Police for information regarding this incident.

The video, which has been viewed more than 2,000 times, was shared on Twitter by a protester who described the horrific scenes.

He wrote: ‘Today I saw how open and transparent racism is and the world is tolerating it… a man called me a monkey, threw glass bottles at man… while everyone that claims they bang for there block was at home sleeping… black people where’s the unity… stand together like the village.’

The pro-statue counter-protest began peacefully on Saturday morning, when activists rallied around the boarded-up statue of Winston Churchill.

But it quickly exploded into chaos when hundreds of hooligans tore down Whitehall and rushed up to the police blockade by the Cenotaph and began pelting officers with cans and bottles.

The trouble spilled out across Westminster and Trafalgar Square became a focal point, where smoke bombs were detonated.

Clashes between BLM and far-right protesters continued into the evening at Waterloo Station.

In a glimmer of goodness among the division, BLM protester Patrick Hutchinson was seen carrying an injured ‘far-right’ supporter to safety.

Following the protests, Boris Johnson: ‘Racist thuggery has no place on our streets. Anyone attacking the police will be met with full force of the law.

‘These marches & protests have been subverted by violence and breach current guidelines.

‘Racism has no part in the UK and we must work together to make that a reality.’

Metropolitan Police commander Bas Javid said: ‘The scenes officers encountered across central London yesterday were utterly shocking. Once again, they were pelted with missiles, or challenged by groups of men intent on violence.

‘Mindless hooliganism such as this is totally unacceptable and I am pleased arrests were made. We will now work closely with the courts in pursuit of justice.’
