A suspected central London pickpocket was caught searching through the bag of an oblivious pedestrian near Piccadilly Circus.

The footage, apparently filmed on Saturday, shows three men following an innocent shopper across a set of traffic lights while one rifles through his bag.

However they are unaware that they themselves are being followed and filmed by a camera-wielding pedestrian just yards from the busy junction in central London.

The video was posted to Reddit by a user who said: ‘Yesterday, I encountered pickpockets live in action near Piccadilly Circus. Be careful guys!’

The user who posted it, JeevanThapa, claimed he had shown the footage to nearby police officers, who apparently told him to take it to a police station.

At the start of the clip the three men are seen crossing what appears to be Great Windmill Street, off Shaftesbury Avenue.

One of them, wearing a white hat and carrying a black rucksack, has his hand in another shopper’s yellow carrier bag.

The oblivious man, wearing a baseball cap, is carrying the bag to one side in his left hand and does not notice.

The suspected thief with his hand in the bag suddenly pulls it out after noticing the camera, before the footage comes to an abrupt end.

Last year London emerged as the worst pickpocketing hotspot in the country with a figure more than five times the national average.

The lowest number of pickpockets was recorded by Dyfed-Powys Police, which patrols Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire in Wales.
