Nearly 1,000 cops arrested in past four years for crimes including rape, GBH and domestic violence – The Sun

NEARLY 1,000 cops were arrested over four years for crimes including rape.

The figures, revealed after a Freedom of Information request, show that 913 officers were nicked between 2015 and 2019 — the equivalent of four every week.

Those cops and 272 other police staff were hauled in for crimes including 142 sex offences — 14 of which were rape — and more than 100 driving offences.

The figures also include 320 violent offences, including GBH and domestic violence.

But less than a quarter of those arrested — 24 per cent — were dismissed as a result.

Just over half of cases – 52 per cent, or 619 cases – ended in no further action being taken within the criminal justice system – but 43 final warnings were issued by forces.

The investigation, carried out by Newsquest's Data Investigations Unit, showed Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Police have seen the highest percentage of both officers and workforce arrested.

And at least 43 police officers or staff members were disqualified from driving.

The Home Office said: "Society rightly expects the police service to act with honesty and integrity.

“Where officers fall short of standards, the public rightly expects those officers to be investigated.

"We remain committed to rooting out a small minority of officers and staff who deliberately break the law or otherwise fail to protect the people they serve.
