Meghan and Harry named baby Lilibet ‘to secure Sussex brand’, expert believes

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have named their daughter after the Queen's nickname to "remain connected" to the Palace, a royal commentator suggested.

Australian columnist Angela Mollard suggested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted to "secure their Sussex brand" regardless of their royal title.

Speaking to The Morning Show on 7news, the expert said: "Harry did ask if they could use the name, if the Queen had said no, they could've gone on Oprah and said 'yeah she wouldn't let us use that name'.

"And my understanding is that Harry really liked the name Lili for quite a long time, a couple of years.

"I imagine they used Lilibet to secure the Sussex brand, to make that connection to the palace."

The Sussexes have firmly denied any allegations that they did not let the Queen know they would be using her nickname for their baby daughter.

Omid Scobie, believed to be a close friend to Meghan, tweeted: "A Sussex source says that the Queen was the first family Harry called after Lilibet’s birth and during that conversation, he shared the couple’s hope of naming their daughter in her honour.

"Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name."

Meghan and Harry announced on Sunday that they had welcomed their second child on Friday (June 4).

A statement on Harry and Meghan's Archewell Foundation website read: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.

"She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.

"This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."
