Man raped fiancée’s dog to death and gets just 60 days in prison

A warped sex fiend who raped his fiancée's dog to death has been jailed for just 60 days.

Fidel Lopez, 52, admitted he abused the dog to sexually arouse himself at home alone.

But a court heard his partner came home to find Estrella, her Lhasa Apso mix, bleeding and the dog later died of the injuries.

However, the most Oregon sentencing guidelines allow for first-degree aggravated animal abuse and sexual assault of an animal is just 60 days – around two months – in jail, and three years of probation.

Sentencing his unrelated namesake at Multnomah County Court, Judge Angel Lopez said: "If it could have been more, I gladly would have given you more time."

The court heard on Monday Lopez's partner was sickened to find her dog whining and hurt in November last year at their house in Portland, Oregon.

Estrella’s owner asked a rape kit be done because Lopez had expressed an interest in bestiality by exposing his genitals to the dog.

He'd even bragged about watching another person sexually assault a dog and asked if his fiancée would ever consider getting a dog bigger than a Lhasa Apso mix.

DNA evidence linked Lopez to the crime, investigators told the judge.

Lopez, who worked in a pancake restaurant, was drunk at the time of the offence.

Joe Calhoun, defending, said his client became frustrated his fiancée of two-and-a-half years didn't return home the previous night or answer his calls.

"He’s told me that he’s owning up to a mistake he made and accepts that responsibility," Mr Calhoun said.

The dog’s owner didn’t attend the hearing.

Lopez must pay her $500 (£380).

"The torture and abuse that Estrella suffered is unimaginable," said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Jergovic, in a news release. Jergovic specializes in prosecuting animal abuse cases for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

"Under Oregon’s current sentencing guidelines, Fidel Lopez is receiving the maximum sentence based on the amount of time he has already served in custody and his lack of criminal history," Jergovic said.
