A MAN was left fighting for his life after he was "set on fire" by overhead power lines at a Birmingham train station this morning.

Police and paramedics rushed to Birmingham New Street Station at around 8am to reports of a man critically injured in an "emergency incident".

One onlooker said the man was "on fire" after coming into contact with overhead power lines.

The man, who has not been named, is now being treated for life-threatening burn injuries following the incident.

'LIFE-THREATENING'

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition after an air ambulance landed on top of the station car park.

One onlooker told Birmingham Live: "There's a huge amount of emergency vehicles and also an air ambulance has flown in."

A British Transport Police spokesman told the BBC: "Paramedics and police quickly arrived on scene, and a man was treated for burn injuries.

"At this early stage it is believed he came into contact with the overhead power lines.

"He has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as life threatening."

He added: "The circumstances of the man receiving his injuries are at this time, not believed to be suspicious."

National Rail said on its website: "Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident at Birmingham New Street.

"Consequently, there are a reduced number of platforms at the station, and this means that that trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised."
