Iran’s chilling response comes after a report claimed Mr Trump had been considering launching a military strike against Iran’s nuclear sites in his final days as US President. A spokesperson from the Iranian government, Ali Rabiei, said: “Any action against the Iranian nation would certainly face a crushing response.” The US President is said to be furious to Iran’s response to the US crippling sanctions and spoke about options with senior US officials.

The discussion is understood to have taken place a day after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) watchdog found Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile was 12 times what was permitted under the 2015 nuclear deal that Mr Trump pulled out of in 2018.

A source close to Mr Trump said the president “asked for options”, the New York Times reported.

However, Mr Trump was dissuaded from advancing his attack plans by his advisers.

His advisers explained any action would lead to a larger conflict in the Middle East.

The source added: “They gave him the scenarios and he ultimately decided not to go forward.”

Iran’s nuclear sites are mostly located underground as a defensive measure against a possible US or Israeli attack.

The US attack options against Iran’s nuclear capabilities include missile attacks, cyber-warfare, and pre-emptive action by Israel.

Israel has previously carried out a series of operations against Iran.

Iran’s Natanz nuclear site has been the focus of an arson attack and a possible cyber-attack this year.

These attacks were blamed on Israel.

It is now thought that Iran has more than double the material to create a nuclear weapon.

Iran has repeatedly said they are developing nuclear material for peaceful purposes.

Iran’s UN ambassador, Majid Takht Ravanchi said: “Iran and the agency have agreed to work in good faith”.

Mr Ravanchi has questioned the nuclear ambitions of its regional rival Saudi Arabia and why the oil-rich nation is not under sanctions.

He said: “If Saudi Arabia is seeking a peaceful nuclear program, it should act in a very transparent manner and allow the agency’s inspectors to verify its activities.”
