PAN-Aadhaar linking date extended to December 31

The deadline to link permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar has been extended till December 31, a CBDT order said on September 28. Earlier, the deadline was September 30. This is the seventh time that the government has extended the deadline.

It is now mandatory to link the two unique IDs for income tax purposes.

The Supreme Court, in September 2018, had declared the Centre’s flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that the biometric ID would remain mandatory for the filing of I-T returns and allotment of PAN.

Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities.

Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to a resident of India and PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the IT Department to a person, firm or entity.

Judge sorry for comment about tree falling on Texas governor

A county administrator in Texas is apologizing for saying Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “hates trees because one fell on him.”

The Texas Tribune reports that the comment made Friday by Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt, a Democrat, during a panel discussion was first reported in a tweet by the online magazine The Federalist.

Abbott, a Republican, has been paralyzed from the waist down since 1984 when a tree fell on him in Houston while he was jogging.

Eckhardt said on her website and in a tweet that she “made a mistake” and apologizes to Abbott. Eckhardt said she “made a flippant comment that was inappropriate.”

Eckhardt’s comments came during a discussion about the Texas Legislature overriding local ordinances such one in Austin regarding the cutting down of trees.

Netanyahu Will Return Mandate to Rivlin, Jerusalem Post Says

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will “return his mandate” to President Reuven Rivlin after being unable to form a government, according to a tweet by the Jerusalem Post’s chief political correspondent.

Gil Hoffman said in a post that he’ll make the move “barring a change of heart” by Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party on letting Netanyahu start as prime minister and bring allies with him into the coalition.

Netanyahu was tapped last week to form Israel’s next government with no clear indication he’d be able to pull that off and end weeks of political stalemate.

The decision late Wednesday by President Reuven Rivlin to hand Netanyahu first crack at building a coalition in parliament granted the Israeli leader a political lifeline a week before he faces a crucial hearing on the corruption allegations that have clouded the last three years of his tenure.

Blue and White, which won the most seats in elections earlier this month, rejected demands from Netanyahu to form a unity government under his leadership with his right-wing and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies, according to the AP.

Gantz has not ruled out an alliance with Likud in but said he would not do so with Netanyahu facing indictment.

Louisville Reporter Gets Apology From Man Who Kissed Her On Camera

A man who kissed an on-camera Louisville reporter without permission during a live report now faces a harassment charge.

WAVE reporter Sara Rivest was doing a live report Friday on the Bourbon & Beyond festival in the city when a man sneaked up and interrupted her. The man pretended to smack her, then kissed her on the cheek.

“I’ve rewatched it so many times and I stopped it at that point. And I pulled away so quickly, I think I was just shocked, to be honest. It was just such an uncomfortable situation,” Rivest said.

Rivest later posted the video on Twitter, and discussed it on the air. The man was identified as Eric Goodman and charged with harassment with physical contact. Rivest said he wrote an apology letter

He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 6. Kentucky law defines harassment as a person who, with intent to intimidate, harass, annoy, or alarm another person, he or she strikes, shoves, kicks, or otherwise subjects him to physical contact. It is a Class B misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $250.
