Hunter finds remains of Colorado man who disappeared 12 years ago

A hunter found the remains of a Colorado man who disappeared in 2010, according to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

The hunter found the remains of William Worley in the backcountry near Redstone on Sept. 11, according to the sheriff’s office. The coroner’s office announced Sunday that they’d identified the remains.

Worley died from a gunshot wound to the head, but the manner of death has not yet been determined, according to the coroner’s office.

Worley was 61 years old when he went missing in July 2010, prompting a weeks-long search in the backcountry near Redstone, about 35 miles southwest of Aspen. Worley lived in town and was reported missing Aug. 1, 2010, two days after he was last seen alive.

His car was found at a trailhead on Aug. 3, 2010, prompting a search of about 50 square miles in Pitkin County that was eventually narrowed to 2 square miles of steep terrain.

The search was called off a few days later, with authorities saying at the time no foul play was suspected in the man’s disappearance.
