Explosion starts inferno in London flats as black smoke fills the sky

Firefighters have rushed to a block off flats on fire in South East London as locals suspect it was caused by a "gas explosion."

Emergency services are at the scene of the inferno located on Granby Street in Shoreditch near Bethnal Green Road.

Shocking footage online shows a plume of thick dark smoke in the air, with reports from residents stating they heard a loud "bang."

It has been reported that there are 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters at the scene of the blaze.

The extent of the injuries remains unknown at this time.

Describing the building blaze, one person said: "Something just went bang in Bethnal Green."

Another witness added: "I felt a bang from nearby while being inside, must be some type of gas explosion."

Fire crews based at Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Shadwell, Dockhead, Islington are at the scene alongside surrounding stations.

Bethnal Green Road has been closed from Brick Lane to Queensbridge Road. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area.
