Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been detained by police during an anti-coal mining protest.

The 20-year-old found her self being taken by officers in the German village of Luetzerath

The village is under threat of being destroyed to make way for a new coal-mine, called Garzweiler II.

Images from the protest show that it quickly turned violent, with pepper spray being used by officers to quell the chaos.

Although Thunberg wasn't handcuffed, she was seen laughing as two heavily armoured police officers – wearing full-face helmets – were seen dragging her away from the protest.

Speaking at the protests yesterday, she said: "Germany is really embarrassing itself right now.

"I think it's absolutely absurd that this is happening in 2023.

"The most effective people are clear, the science is clear, we need to keep the carbon in the ground.

"When Government's are actively destroying the environment, putting countless people at risk then people step up.

    "We stand together in solidarity."

Despite the protests, the entire town has already been cleared, with 30 homes, 35 "tree structures" and 300 people evicted to other towns and cities.

German newspaper Bild reports that, since the evacuations began recently, around 70 police officers have been injured – with 12 arrests.

At today's protest, nine protestors have been taken to hospital, however the police confirmed that "no one was seriously injured".

Indigo Drau, a spokeswoman for the organisers, on Sunday told a press conference the police had gone in with "pure violence".

Several reports state that police used "massive batons, pepper spray… water cannons, dogs and horses" during today's chaos.

Two activists were found hiding in an underground tunnel, which is thought to be where the new coal mine will start.

Video footage from the scene appear to show police allegedly trying to kettle the peaceful protestors – of which Greta was at the front of the group of 10 or so people – into one small area.

They then proceeded to surrounded them – with Thunberg being taken away by the two officers.

When the protests first began yesterday, around 100 or so protestors were on the scene, but it now appears that the numbers have dwindled over the last 24 hours once the police became involved.
