Dad’s heartbreak as baby weighing just 2lbs dies a day after being born with his legs fused together – The Sun

A DAD has shared his heartbreak after his baby was born with his legs fused together and died in his arms just one day old.

First time dad Stefan Shaw welcomed his “miracle baby” Joseph, who was born with no kidneys, bowels or genitals on February 3.

He was delivered via emergency C-Section seven weeks early and weighed just 2lbs after Stefan’s ex-partner Chelby went for a scan.

Stefan, 26, told Derbyshire Live that he and Chelby, also 26, of Alvaston, want to give their son “the best send-off possible”.

The pair managed to have their little one Christened at Royal Derby Hospital before he died in Stefan's arms.

Stefan, who is currently homeless and sleeping on a friend's sofa, said: “When I got to the hospital they said that from the waist down Joseph was like a fish.

“I had never seen a baby like my son. He was like a mermaid, he was a unique, beautiful baby boy.”

Joseph’s condition worsened after he was born and his parents were told he would not survive.

Stefan said: “They had to pump air into him while he was being christened to keep him alive.

“We stood around our miracle baby, had him christened for his last precious moments before we had to let him go.

“While I was holding him they took the tube out of his mouth and he died in my arms.

“It was very heartbreaking and extremely hard to let go of something that meant the world to you.”

Stefan said that after spending three days with him they planned to say goodbye to their son on Saturday.

But the proud dad, who suffers with mental health issues, said the reality has not hit him yet.

He and Chelby had been trying to have a baby for a year before they got pregnant.

Stefan said: “When Chelby went for her 20 week scan we were told that Joseph wouldn’t make it as there was no fluid in the amniotic sack and no kidneys.

“We thought the worst but he made it three months more. Doctors were shocked he survived so long.”

Stefan and Chelby have set up a fundraising page to raise money for Joseph’s funeral.
