Community-based 'interrupters' help cut crime in New York

Shootings are down city-wide, but even more so in neighbourhoods canvassed by Violence Interrupters, a community-based programme being replicated nationwide, resulting in safer streets.

    Mass shootings in the US have attracted headlines worldwide and prompted a national debate about gun control, but the crime rate in New York is at a 70-year low.

    Police say one reason is because of a community-based programme, that has little to do with law enforcement.
