British scientist disappears after going for morning run on Greek holiday

Police are searching for a British woman, 34, who went missing while on holiday with her partner.

Astrophysicist Dr Natalie Christopher was last seen more than 24 hours ago in Ikaria after travelling to the Aegean island on Saturday.

Her partner, 38, reported her missing to the police after she failed to return home and did not answer her mobile phone on Monday.

Police are using helicopters to try to find Anglo-Cypriot Dr Christopher, who lives in Cyprus.

They said in a statement: ‘The police search, which began yesterday, includes members of Ikaria’s firefighting service with two vehicles, a group of volunteers, members of the coast guard and a helicopter form the civil protection agency.’

Authorities also confirmed they were looking at bed sheets that had blood on them, which were apparently used by the couple at a hotel in Kerame.

Hotel owner Theodoris Theodorakis said the blood drops were ‘typical of a nosebleed’, according to local media.

Police spokesman Theodoros Chronopoulos added they had not ruled anything out as they continued to investigate the scientist’s disappearance.

He said: ‘We will continue our search tomorrow and at the same time intensify our enquiry into her disappearance.

‘We are in the process of gathering evidence and taking witness statements from everyone we can possibly take them from.’

Local reports said a radio signal from Dr Christopher’s phone may have been picked up on the island of Fournous, which is located opposite Ikaria where she was staying.
