Bouncer Papa Bear was the ‘life and soul of party’ before he was killed near pub

A well-known bouncer nicknamed 'Papa Bear' was allegedly killed in a city centre assault.

Terry Findler, 51, is believed to have rushed to help fellow security guards in Tontine Street, Hanley, after a disturbance broke out near the Wetherspoons pub.

Terry reportedly suffered a head injury during the incident and was rushed to hospital, reported Stoke On Trent Live.

The much-loved family man, from Knutton, had worked at The Tontine pub on the other side of the street.

Shocked colleagues and pub regulars paid tribute.

Pub owner Martin Scott had worked with Terry for 18 years.

He said: “Terry was a devoted father and grandad. He was always willing to help others with their houses or repair work.

“He was the life and soul of the party. We used to call him Papa Bear because he was just so friendly. He was the friend that everyone would want, he was a lovely person. He was my brother and it’s heart-breaking that he is gone.”

Terry was a well-known and had worked at various pubs across the city, including the Albion and Pig Pen. He had also been running Cookies Bar and Kitchen, in Percy Street, for the past three years.

Mario Lowndes had known Terry for 34 years and described him as a "joker" and that "he loved to have a laugh and make people smile."

Nigel Cann, 59, from Stoke, added: “He was a lovely person who would do anything for others and he will be sadly missed.”

Barmaid Charlene Watson, 37, had known Terry for almost 17 years and described him as a "loving person" with a "huge heart".

She said: “Terry loved his job and he was always a provider for his family. He drove me to my wedding 10 years ago and we had a brilliant time.

“I always had a laugh with him. He had such a strong and friendly character and he will be missed by everyone.”

Police were called to Tontine Street at around 10.10pm where they found several members of the public were detaining a man in the street.

But, after the detained man was arrested, Terry became ill and was taken to hospital.

Officers have confirmed that a 28-year-old man, from Hanley, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the alleged assault.
