The SNP leader said a second vote would occur within “the very early period” of the next Holyrood Parliament – understood to be within nine to eleven months. SNP delegates and members will meet virtually this weekend at the party’s conference to discuss party policy with the Scottish First Minister due to give an update on Scotland’s future on Monday.

Yesterday, Ms Sturgeon said she had neither “ruled it out nor ruled it in” when asked if a second independence referendum could happen in 2021.

But her comments have been met with anger amongst the British public with many lashing out at the First Minister.

One person said: “Don’t believe the polls Sturgeon.

“We don’t want your independence rubbish.

“You couldn’t run a raffle never mind run Scotland!”

Someone else said: “No one is interested in this or you, plus you don’t have a mandate for this and hopefully you never get one.”

A third person fumed: “How much will the referendum cost Scotland?

“I don’t want to pay for it.

“We should take it out of the money given to Scotland this year – although that should be £15bn short as they have a black hole – another thing I don’t expect to pay for…”

Another person said Ms Sturgeon “doesn’t deserve” to be in charge of Scotland.

Someone else added: “The Sturgeon needs to be shut up.

“Reverse the devolution and take back control.”

While a fifth person said: “I do hope the Scots get rid of this awful divisive party.

“Devolution and all its benefits have been high-jacked by this insular nationalist mob.

“Why on Earth at a time where there is such turmoil would you want more.

“If it took four years to leave the EU, it will take 10 years or more to separate a 300 year union with all its negativity.

“In 10 years the EU won’t exist.”

Another reader simply said: “When her and the SNP start telling the truth about what it will mean then she might not have the support for independence she thinks she has.”

Ms Sturgeon made the announcement during a round of interviews of the SNP Conference.

The First Minister of Scotland said: “I think the referendum should, for a whole variety of reasons, be in the earlier part of the next parliament.

“I intend to say more about this before the election in our manifesto, but we are still in a global pandemic that I feel a bit more hopeful about seeing the end of than I did even just a couple of months ago.”

Ms Sturgeon’s call comes amid increasing support for Scottish independence with 14 polls showing high levels of support for a second referendum.

The most recent YouGov polling conducted earlier this month put the SNP on 56 percent for the constituency vote and 47 percent for the regional list.

While the Scottish Conservatives stood at 19 percent and 20 percent respectively, while Scottish Labour were on 15 percent and 13 percent.
